As I mentioned before, Trane UK Ltd, does seem to operate an ‘us and them’ system when it comes to interdepartmental operations. Only this week for instance, all the agency guys got a 3.21% pay increase (against 2.4% for the permanent staff), this unduely pissed-off the permanent guys when they realised they had been stuffed to the tune of 5p/hr.
They got even more pissed-off when they were told that they would loose £120 off their safety ‘bonus’ due to a recordable accident (only one more required to completely eradicate the bonus completely).
Seriously though, stress seems to be quite a common complaint in the plant as a whole. One of my colleagues had 6 months off with stress-induced depression. This was brought-on by the increase in job duties as his roll was expanded from ‘engineer’ to include ‘IT’, ‘5-S’ & ’sixSigma’, eventually, when the pay increases were announced, he asked for an extra 50p/hr too cover the extra duties he had been landed with. Soon after they refused, he quit to go work for a firm in Ipswich.
I wonder what Ingersoll Rands’ first action will be when they complete the take-over of the company ?. With any luck, they will clear-out the management & start from the ground up. This time, perhaps they will employ a management team who are capable of working-out exactly how much a unit costs to make (unlike the current bunch who still can’t give an accurate build-price even after 20 years).
